These directions will screw you over HARDCORE. He's not telling you WHERE or when to take these turns. When compared against his turn locations on the map, the whole thing becomes a giant mess. Also there are dead-end offshoots he is ignoring like they're not there by not counting them as turns, and thus making things even more oblique.
Given that, His other aides to the first two sections of the Pit are incredibly useful, especially the map of the 2nd area with the locations clearly labelled and easily interpreted.
