I just started playing Dungeon Siege II and i was wondering if you think its more beneficial to have my melee fighter focus on dual wielding or two-handed weapons.

Which will generally do more damage?

If it's pure, unadulterated damage you want, go for dual wielding. Waves of Force is a great crowd controller, while Elemental Rage is perfect for taking down bosses.

For medium sized parties (Veteran difficulty) consider getting a fighter into 2-handed weapons for War Cry (reduces enemy armor, and the scatter effect can be mitigated with the nature mage's Gravity Stone).

The most beneficial, if you have other party members, may be a sword/shield fighter, because his defenses come in handy to protect weaker characters, who in turn deal out more damage than any melee character.

That said, my dual-wielder was also able to stay alive fairly easily, so QuickDraw's suggestion is the best.
