Be sure also that your selected character is the closest to it. I had this happen when I clicked to enter and another character "not selected" was the one close to the entrance and I could not get them to go in (stayed black). So I moved away and then back and my selected character was in the lead and it worked fine.
Also I noticed the path nodes are are not as open in DSII. i.e. if I click a place further away on the visable screen the characters cannot find there way there as easily as in DS1. They could not go around a few rocks and structures on there own. I had to click the path more often, rather then just where I wanted to go. I am thinking that this is why you have experienced this. The lead/selected character needs to lead the way in this case I am thinking.
