I don't see why people need packmules. What is the point of hording hundreds of items which you probably won't even use anyway. And if your mules happens to die you're kinda screwed as well.

Packmules, IMO, are good for people who don't know how to decide what to keep and what to toss. If you play long enough, packmules become unnessecary because you know more about items.

Packmule can carry items, which can be sold. I got most of gold from selling for me useless items. So packmule was best source for new items. I always disband mule when necessary and retrieved later.
Little complicated, but always convenient at trading post.
